Raphael's Tea Rooms of Sedgwick

Raphael’s Tea Rooms are commercial facilities that we have developed to provide our young people with exciting real world work-related learning and development opportunities in Hospitality and Catering and in developing their confidence and life skills.
Our students learn and develop a wide range of employability and life skills within the classroom and within Raphael’s Tea Rooms including: food safety; food and drinks preparation; front of house; waiter service; money management; and till management.
We are open initially once a week on a Friday for delicious tea & cake, as well as for specialist events to support our fundraising.
Our students, with the support of the dedicated team of teachers, teaching assistants and senior leaders, run the tea rooms from the moment a guest reserves a table, until the moment they leave!
Please do come and experience this unique provision and in directly supporting our students in preparing for adulthood and future employment.

By visiting, you will be supporting the learning and development of our ambitious young people with special educational needs and disabilities, directly helping them to build in confidence and independence.
We remind you that the tea rooms, whilst being open to the community for you to enjoy, is a learning environment for young people aged 14-19.
Please bear this in mind when you visit and although we provide a high standard of service, service make take a little longer as the students are training.
We kindly ask you to follow our code of conduct and safeguarding regulations which will be sent to you via email.

Training and Student Roles

Table Waiting and Clearing

When a student is at the right stage in their learning, in the curriculum and for us to support their individual needs, each young person is trained and develops the knowledge and skills to wait on tables by taking orders, serving and clearing, till management and customer management. They will then apply and initiate these skills within the tea rooms!

Food Preparation

All students develop food preparation skills throughout their time at Penn Hall and Sedgwick College. Once a young person is at the right stage in their learning, in the curriculum and for us to support their individual needs, they complete up to a Level 2 Food Safety and Hygiene accreditation. Once complete, the young person takes on a supported role within the kitchen, preparing and cooking meals for the tea rooms and special events!

Till Management and Money Handling

Each student is trained in our state-of-the-art till system (SumUp POS) and over time learns how to use all areas of the till, from the back office systems and software to the front of house sales. Students develop and apply skills in generating an accurate bill, enabling the system to take cash or card payments, and ensuring customers receive the correct amount of change!
